Keynotes

Genevieve Bell Genevieve Bell
Senior Researcher, Intel Corporation.
Genevieve Bell is a Senior Researcher within Intel Research. She is a member of Peoples and Practices Research - an interdisciplinary team of research social scientists and designers embedded within Intel's advanced research and development labs. Since joining Intel, Bell has conducted ethnographic research in a variety of consumer spaces, including malls, retail districts, and museums, as well as within a range of different American households. Bell has also conducted significant research beyond the US, including a five-country, strategically situated, ethnographic study of European domestic spaces for several Intel product groups, and a study of the emerging middle classes in China and India. She is particularly interested in issues of cultural difference as they are expressed around technology adoption and use.

Bell has recently completed a three year research project focused on gaining a better understanding of the ways in which cultural practices in urban Asia are shaping people's relationships to new information and communication technologies. As part of this project, she has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in 7 Asian countries, encompassing 100 households in 17 different cities. Insights gained from this project have shaped product offerings, investment decisions and strategic planning at Intel.

Prior to joining Intel in 1998, Bell taught anthropology and Native American Studies at Stanford University. Bell received her BA/MA in anthropology from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania in 1991. She earned a PhD in cultural anthropology from Stanford University in 1998. She is working on a book based on her fieldwork in Asia.


Margaret Heffernan
Top 100 Media Executive, International Author
Margaret was born in Texas, raised in Holland and educated at Cambridge University. She began her career at the BBC where, she wrote, directed, produced and commissioned prize-winning documentaries and dramas.

Leaving the BBC, Margaret ran the trade association IPPA, which represented the interests of film and television producers and was described by the Financial Times as "the most formidable lobbying organization in England."

In 1994, Margaret sold her business and moved to the U.S. where she advised software companies on the emerging multimedia market. Subsequently, she ran, bought and sold software companies, including ZineZone Corporation and iCAST Corporation. She was named one of the "Internet's Top 100" by Silicon Alley Reporter in 1999, one of the "Top 25" by Streaming Media magazine and one of the "Top 100 Media Executives" by The Hollywood Reporter in 2000.

Margaret writes a regular column for Fast Company and Real Business magazines. She sits on the board of several companies and continues to advise both established and start up businesses. Her book, The Naked Truth: A Modern Woman's Manifesto about Working and What Really Matters was published in September 2004 by Jossey-Bass. Widowed in 1985, Margaret remarried in 1991 and has two children.


Daphne Kis Daphne Kis
VP Business to Business - CNET
Daphne Kis is Vice President of Business to Business Programs at CNET Networks. Prior to CNET's acquistion of EDventure Holdings in March 2004, she was President & CEO of EDventure for 16 years. Ms. Kis is responsible for directing Release 1.0's strategic business development and overall management, for publishing its monthly report, Release 1.0, and for executive producing the company's conferences, including PC Forum, the technology industry's premier executive gathering. She further manages its roster of startup investments.

Outside the company, Ms. Kis sits on the executive board of the New York branch of the Women's High-Tech Coalition and is a member of the board of Girls Learn International, a non-profit organization dedicated to building female literacy worldwide. She currently sits on the board of directors of iPerceptions.com and is a business partner to Montreal-based Propulsion Ventures.

Ms. Kis holds an MBA from NYU's Stern School of Business and a bachelor's degree in Women's History from Hampshire College. She lives in Manhattan with her husband and two daughters.


Robin Raskin Robin Raskin
Tech Media Tours, "Internet Mom"
Robin Raskin has spent the past 25 years helping parents raise a generation of digital kids. She's the former editor of PC Magazine and former Editor in Chief of FamilyPC. She's been a columnist for USA Today Online and has authored 5 books about parenting in the digital age. She's been featured on most network television shows including: NBC Today Show, Dateline, CNN, MSNBC, Live with Regis and Kelly, CBS Early Show, and Fox's Good Day New York. As a freelance writer her work has appeared in numerous womens' and technology magazines.

Today, Ms. Raskin is known as The Internet Mom, and produces her own monthly television tours on technology that appear nationwide. This year she created a special magazine issue called Raising Teens, and is currently writing a book for Random House called "200 Things Every Parent Needs to Know About Sending their Kids to College". Raskin consults for the technology industry on strategies to reach consumers; clients include Nickelodeon, Intel, The Motion Picture Association of America, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, SONY, Virgin Mobile, Disney Publishing, Ziff Davis Publishing and Gruner and Jahr. She's also the Director of Communications at The Princeton Review. An outspoken advocate for raising safe children in a digital age, Raskin has served on numerous committees in Washington, including a two year stint with the National Academy of Sciences.


Karenann Terrell Karenann Terrell
VP, CIO - Chrysler Group and Mercedes Benz North America
Karenann Terrell is the Vice President & CIO of the Chrysler Group and Mercedes Benz North America (MBNA) of Daimler Chrysler. Formerly Director of Global Web Infrastructure, Technology, Operations, & Strategic Planning/Information Technology Management, Ms. Terrell has directed IT infrastructure operations including all Data Center, Network, Security and Middleware activities supporting DaimlerChrysler's North American Business Units. She transformed the operations through large outsourcing and off-shore resource realignment.

Previously, Ms. Terrell was the Director of eConnect Platform for DaimlerChrysler where she oversaw all e-business activities at the Chrysler Group both on the product and consumer side of the company. Prior to joining DaimlerChrysler, Ms. Terrell was with General Motors' e-GM Division where she was Director of e-Vehicle Activities. During her career, she has held various engineering assignments in Product Engineering, Research & Development, and Manufacturing as well as Brand Management responsibilities for future vehicles. She earned her bachelor degree in electrical engineering from General Motors Institute and her master's from Purdue University. She is one of Automotive News' 100 Influential Women in the Automotive Business, and has been named Office Depot's Business Woman of the Year.


Dana Thorat
Research Manager - IDC
Dana Thorat is a research manager for IDC's Clients and Mobility primary research service. Ms. Thorat conducts research among consumer and business mobile and IT users, as well as corporate buyers of IT products and services. Much of her research is based on regular surveys conducted among IDC's International Technology Advisory Council, a panel of more than 28,000 technology users and buyers worldwide. Her studies typically focus on gauging attitudes, preferences, behaviors, and purchasing patterns of end users and corporate buyers through segmentation, predictive modeling, and other forms of data analysis.

Ms. Thorat was formerly a senior research analyst in IDC's Wireless and Mobile Communications program, where she researched wireless mass market wireless voice and data services and applications. Since 1995, Ms. Thorat has also held other roles at IDC, including senior analyst for IDC's Global Market Models and Demand-Side Research service where she managed mobile and enterprise technology panels to support various primary research efforts. She was also a senior analyst in the Residential Broadband and Telecommunications service, where she conducted research on the market for enhanced telecommunications services, and in IDC's Investment Research Services where she was responsible for a number of IDC's larger management consulting accounts.

Prior to IDC, Ms. Thorat worked at Network World magazine as an associate features editor. Ms. Thorat has presented at IDC sponsored events and client conferences and is frequently quoted in business and trade publications. She has a B.S. degree in liberal arts from Northeastern University in Boston, MA and is pursuing a master's degree in Marketing Analytics at Bentley College.

Marcia Wieder Marcia Wieder

Marcia inspires thousands of people through her workshops. This year she is leading the Create Your Future Now Dream Weekends in five cities nationwide and a Dream Retreat in Maui. Barbara Annis is an outstanding leading edge thinker who has designed breakthrough workshops and interventions since 1979. She has been studying transformational learning with many exceptional thinkers, including Dr. Flores, Ph.D. Program Director of Linguistics, University of Berkeley. Her programs include workshops for men and women, youth, and couples, as well as her highly acclaimed corporate initiatives. Andy Armstrong Andy Armstrong
Senior Manager, Contracts - Raytheon
Andy Armstrong is a Senior Manager, Contracts at Raytheon Electronics Warfare (EW) Division in Goleta, California. As the Contracts Department Manager at EW, Andy and his team of Contracts professionals negotiate and administer contracts for electronic warfare systems that protect aircraft and combatant ships. The division's customers include all of the U.S. Government Department of Defense organizations, as well as foreign governments and companies.

Andy has 25 years of experience in the negotiation of domestic and international contracts for research and development programs, as well as production of missiles, airborne and surface radars, and electronic warfare equipment. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a degree in economics, and earned an MBA from University of California, Riverside, with an emphasis on finance.

Vicky Bratton is a software manager at Raytheon Aircraft. She has 25 years industry experience and is currently responsible for managing consultants, contractors, vendors and direct employees in certifying the integrated software systems for the Horizon Aircraft.

Lena Chung is a managing director at AT&T. She is the author of "The Impact of VoIP in China and Asia/Pacific", published in Connect-World 2001.


Marian Cook Marian Cook

Marian Cook is the President of Ageos, a business and technology consulting firm that helps clients find innovative ways to drive profitable growth and develop their leadership. Headquartered in Chicago with an office in Denver and working internationally, the company partners with clients to create new services, products and markets, streamline operations, and create sales and business strategies.

Jody's goal is to educate women from all walks of life, providing the business knowledge and tools that will allow them freedom in their lifestyles, being financially viable on their own as WIRED (Women's Internet Results Experts Development) professionals. Carol Curry Carol Curry
Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, Space and Airborne Systems - Raytheon Company
Carol A. Curry is vice president of Strategy and Business Development for Raytheon Company's Space and Airborne Systems (SAS) business. She is responsible for the development of strategic business and investment plans for all elements in the product line, creation of strategic corporate alliances, and management of the new business development process. She has more than 28 years of experience in systems and software engineering, program management and engineering management. Ms. Curry is a member of Raytheon's corporate Integrated Business Development Council, the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance strategic business area and the SAS Leadership Team.

Previously Ms. Curry was vice president of Strategic Systems for SAS, where she was responsible for new business capture, technology development and program execution of space and space-qualified systems for defense and civil applications. Prior to coming to Raytheon, Ms. Curry joined Hughes Aircraft Company as a member of the technical staff in 1977, having previously worked in analysis and simulation of infrared focal planes at Aerojet Electro-Systems. At Hughes, she held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility in technical, line and program management for the F-15, F-14 and F/A-18 radars and the Common Integrated Processor for the Advanced Tactical Fighter.

Ms. Curry received a bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences from Stanford University. As a Hughes Fellow, she earned a master's degree in systems engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and later completed UCLA's Executive Program in Management. In 2001, she received the Raytheon "Diversity Hero" award. In 2002, she received Raytheon's Chairman's "Hero Award."


Liz Dubelman Liz Dubelman

Liz Dubelman is the founder of VidLit - a digital storytelling and marketing company featured in Publisher's Weekly and Publisher's Lunch. Her pre-digital career included ten years in film production. Her television work won her two Emmys -- one as a producer and one as a director. She was the first woman member of the labor negotiating committee of I.A.T.S.E., New York local 644 (cinematographers). She has been consultant to all of the major studios and many music companies in the area of digital rights and Internet content. Ms. Dubelman is a graduate of Hampshire College.

Deborah Gallant Deborah Gallant

Deborah Gallant is the founder of Lifework Catalyst, a coaching/consulting practice which helps individuals discover their calling and start up their own businesses. She works one-on-one with clients to reinvent themselves and empowers them to pursue their dreams.

Deborah has been working with entrepreneurs and start-up businesses over a wide range of industries for five years. Before moving to California in 2002, she was Senior VP and a founder of Intro Inc. a NYC consultancy where she was the senior business strategist for early-stage ventures. She was an early Internet pioneer, helping build FamilyPoint.com, iVillage.com and she started Journal Square Interactive (JSQ), a profitable early division of Advance Publications Internet. Deborah's career foundation is media and consumer marketing in radio, syndication, advertising, marketing and sales, including working for ABC Radio.

Berkley Books published Deborah's book Internet Jobs For the Rest of Us in 2001. She chairs the Entrepreneur's Committee for Women In Technology International---LA Chapter and serves on the Ventura County Advisory Board for Women's Economic Ventures. She is an active member of NAWBO-Ventura County and the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village Chamber of Commerce. She is a columnist for Ventura Life & Style and a frequent speaker & teacher on transitions, careers and business startups.

She holds a BA in American Studies from Brandeis University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an MBA in Marketing and Management from Columbia University Graduate School of Business, where she was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma.


Anthony Ghosn Anthony Ghosn

Anthony E. Ghosn, the founder of Dynamic Performance Metrics (recently merged with Risk Analysis Group), brings over 20 years of experience in management accounting, process integration and IS solutions development to the fields of Corporate Governance and Risk Management. Mr. Ghosn's cross-disciplinary background in the areas of SEC compliance, business management and business intelligence application-development provides the foundation for the firm's proprietary approach to Corporate Performance Management from a Corporate Governance (boardroom) perspective. As the creator of the Compliance Solution MatrixTM, proprietary algorithms and technical architecture for enterprise solutions to Sarbanes Oxley legislation and other regulatory matters, Mr. Ghosn and his team are recognized by some of the world's largest IT vendors as top-tier service providers.

Cara Good Cara Good
Award Winning Branding Expert
Cara Good is an award-winning business communications strategist and former journalist with expertise in public, media and analyst relations as well as corporate marketing and positioning. She drives the strategic direction of every client account at WunderMarx Inc., a corporate marketing and PR agency that integrates internal and external communications with brand-building to increase sales and top-of-mind awareness for companies poised to become market leaders. Prior to launching WunderMarx, Good was director of client strategy at Hilary Kaye Associates Inc., a PR firm focused on emerging-growth businesses. She also served as the director of corporate and marketing communications at Ethentica Inc., a market-defining provider of digital security products and services.

Good believes strongly in giving back to the community. She is an executive member of the board of directors for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Orange County chapter, and serves as the organization's vice president of PR. Good advises many other nonprofits as well. In addition, she is involved with several professional organizations. She is the executive vice president of the International Association of Business Communicators, Orange County, and also is the managing director of the South Orange County chapter of eWomenNetwork. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in communications from National University and was recognized as the Distinguished Graduate by the School of Arts and Sciences. She also has conducted graduate work at Pepperdine University in business administration.


Patrick Gray Patrick Gray
Chief Technology Officer - ISS
Patrick Gray is the director of X-Force operations for the office of the chief technology officer at Internet Security Systems, Inc. (ISS). Upon his retirement from the FBI in November 2001, Gray joined ISS and created the X-Force Internet Threat Intelligence Center, responsible for teams responding to network-related emergencies caused by external or internal threats. His experience as the director of the penetration testing and emergency response teams at ISS gained him first-hand knowledge of the hacking community, its methodologies and their affect on government and private sector ecommerce.

Prior to joining Internet Security Systems, Gray served as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for twenty years. He was assigned as a supervisory special agent at FBI Headquarters, Washington, DC, in the Intelligence Division where he was responsible for global counterintelligence investigations. In 1988, Gray assumed supervisory duties for the FBI's Drug and Violent Gang Program in Georgia. In 1994, he became the supervisor of the Technical Services Squad in addition to functioning as the acting assistant special agent in charge of the FBI in Georgia. As a forensic examiner in the FBI's elite Computer Assistance Response Team, he investigated cases involving financial institutions, government agencies and universities.

Gray was assigned to the investigation of the September 11 attacks in 2001, providing "operational support to the Intelligence Community." He is coordinator of the Atlanta Chapter of InfraGard, an alliance between the public and private sectors for the sharing of information regarding technology security issues. He continues to work closely with the FBI, the National Infrastructure Protection Center and the Department of Homeland Security.


Mary Ann Halpin Mary Ann Halpin
Master Photographer
Mary Ann Halpin is a master photographer and a recognized expert in the power of image and women's issues. Halpin has received acclaim for revealing everything from the glamorous beauty of Hollywood and the exquisite glow of pregnancy to the heartbreaking despair of Skid Row. Her latest book Fearless Women: Midlife Portraits, released April 2005, features the photographs and stories of Joni Mitchell, Erin Brokovitch and many other extraordinary women. Mary Ann traveled across the country promoting this book and her work appeared on such shows as The Today Show.

As author of her first book, Pregnant Goddesshood: A Celebration of Life, she garnered national attention for her book's powerful images, featured in LIFE Magazine, The View, Inside Edition, and Extra. She pioneered the trend of pregnant portraits and was asked to use her talents on A Baby Story.

In her commitment to see beyond stereotypes, she revealed the many faces of homelessness, which graced many Los Angeles Mission billboards. This led to an invitation by the Los Angeles' Mission Celebrity Action Council to co-direct a documentary with Linda Gray about women reclaiming their lives in the Mission's rehabilitation program.

Mary Ann leads yearly creative and spiritual-renewal women's retreats in the mountains outside of L.A. and this year in Bali. She believes that in this fast-paced world, we need to renew our inner creative vision and relieve the stress that results in creative and spiritual burnout and to nurture our creative inner child through introspection and communication with nature.


Elizabeth Harz
Marketing Expert - Yahoo!
Elizabeth Harz joined Yahoo! in July 2003 as the company's Category Development Officer for technology, responsible for driving sales of technology and telecommunications clients. She leads Yahoo!'s sales team, focusing on delivering essential advertising solutions for Fortune 500 technology companies. Additionally, she is responsible for Yahoo!'s investment in services for the technology and telecommunications industries, ranging from relevant industry research and insights to developing solutions and events for marketers within these industries.

Prior to joining Yahoo!, Ms. Harz spent nearly ten years with CNET and ZDNet, most recently as CNET's senior vice president of sales. Holly McElheran is a Senior Engineer for Raytheon in the Systems Architecture and Design department. Holly began her career as a lead software qualification test engineer for Standard Missile Blk IVa. Subsequently, she performed systems algorithm design and development, including roles as algorithm developer on several programs and lead system analyst on two Raytheon R&D proposals. In 2004, she became involved with the Homeland Defense Area 1 (HLDA1) project, a program that was comprised of multinational corporations, academic, military and defense organizations. As part of the Lead Systems Integration team, she performed system performance analysis, system integration, and flight test support under extreme time constraints to ensure on-time deployment. Her work was instrumental in the HLDA1 team receiving the 2004 Raytheon Award for Excellence in Technology.

While working full-time at Raytheon, Holly was awarded a full scholarship to Tufts University, where she is pursuing her PhD in Mathematics, specializing in Mathematical Neuroscience. Previously, she taught undergraduate mathematics at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and SUNY Albany, where she earned her Master's degree in Mathematics.

She serves as a mentor in the Association for Women in Mathematics, and recently took part in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics focus group on the role in mathematics in industry. Peggy Rantanen has been with Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems for 20 years, most recently as Manager, Major Subcontracts for Electronic Warfare Systems in Goleta, CA. In this role, she negotiates and manages multi-million dollar subcontracts for radar warning receivers and other systems used by the US Navy, Air Force and foreign governments.

In 2003, Ms. Rantanen founded a women's network serving the three Raytheon business units in Goleta, California. During her two-year term as President of the Raytheon Women's Network-Goleta, membership grew to 135, representing women from a diverse range of occupations within Raytheon. In 2004 she led a team that revitalized the existing "Raytheon Women of Distinction" awards program, resulting in nominations for 40 Raytheon women. She has also served on the SAS Goleta Diversity Council, and is a founding member of Raytheon's Global Women's Network.

Ms. Rantanen has served on the board of directors for Alpha Resource Center - Santa Barbara, a non-profit organization that provides training and advocacy for the mentally retarded. Most recently, Steele served as vice president of marketing, Worldwide Customer Services Division for NCR Corp. in Dayton, Ohio. In this role, Steele managed all facets of the marketing discipline including strategic marketing, channel management, marketing communications, product and services marketing, sales tools, competitive analysis, press and analyst relations, strategic alliances, and on-line/demand creation. Earlier in her career, Steele served as vice president of sales and marketing and chief executive officer for Sun Systems. She has also held marketing and sales management positions at Edison Group, Oracle Corp., Ceridian Corp. and Criterion. Steele is a member of Women in Technology Incorporated (WITI) and earned her bachelor of arts degree in marketing and management from Concordia University in Montreal.
