Dr. Carmen Ortiz
Manager, Technical Staff, IBM Almaden Research Center

Dr. Carmen Ortiz is currently manager of the technical staff in the director's office of the IBM Almaden Research Center, in San Jose, California. In this position, she is heavily involved in both the fundamental operation and the technical strategy direction for the laboratory.

Ortiz graduated from Madrid Complutense University in Spain with a M.A. in physics. She received her Ph.D. in materials science from the Max Planck Institute for Materials Science and Stuttgart University, West Germany.

Ortiz first joined IBM in 1979 as a visiting scientist, working on low-temperature optical memories. In 1981, she returned to Spain to work in the Spanish Research Council and started a research group to work on laser interaction with thin films in the Optics Institute, Madrid. She joined the IBM Almaden Research Lab as a research staff member in 1985 to work on technical applications of thin films.

Since 1987, she has served in a series of technical management positions in research and development of thin films for optical and magnetic storage applications.

Ortiz is author of more than 70 technical publications. She has been elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and granted the Tribute to Women in Industry (TWIN) Award. She is a member of a number of professional committees in the field of thin film science and technology.

Throughout her career, she has been involved with issues of women in science. She is a member of the Association of Women in Science (AWIS) and the TWIN Academy. She is also a member of the board of Women in Technology International (WITI).
