Sundari Mitra
Design Engineering Manager, Sun Microelectronics
Sundari Mitra is a Sun Microelectronics design engineering manager. Mitra is an unusual leader who is able to attract diverse teams for her projects. During her four years with Sun, her efforts have made an enormous impact to her organization.
Having two older brothers in engineering drove Mitra to pursue a technical career. Mitra also had a natural aptitude for the science fields.
Mitra's undergraduate program had a pre-defined syllabus, typical of schools in India. Her most significant achievement as an undergraduate was a final year project which 3 students worked on. The project was to design and implement a data acquisition system for a nuclear power plant. The team's successful implementation was used as a prototype for the plant.
The focus of Mitra's master's degree was one aspect of electrical engineering - VLSI design. Since receiving her master's degree, she has been focusing on VLSI design for 8+ years in industry.
Mitra has been instrumental in the last few years in making many of the UltraSPARC products and its derivatives successful. She worked as a senior staff engineer as well as a circuit design manager on UltraSPARCII and UltraSPARC 1+ programs. The nature of her work spans across the entire UltraSPARC team and she is a driver of key global issues.
Mitra has been a mentor for several junior engineers while at Sun. She has provided them with technical leadership and direction. Moreover, she has guided them in taking strong steps in the areas of leadership and communications.
Mitra is married with two young children. Recently, she went to a part time (and telecommuting) schedule to balace focus on work and family. Outside of work, Mitra has a great deal of invlovement with her kid's school and takes pride in her involvement with Indian community activities. Mitra also has a degree in Indian classical music. Taking care of and spending quality time with her two kids takes up what is left of her "spare" time.
