Jennifer Valverde
Manager, Engineering Projects
Allied Signal Federal Manufacturing & Technologies/New Mexico
Nominated by: Bridget Navoda
Excerpt from nomination: "She has fielded weapons engagement simulations that are used to train agents who protect nuclear weapons. Not to mention that she designs and develops some of those engagement systems. When Jennifer tells the stories of the simulations (and how she had to learn to shoot a machine gun herself), I'm always so impressed and intrigued by her composure as well as her love of the challenge.
Jennifer has provided some mentoring on "what it takes to get into technical fields" at the Career Enrichment Center which is part of the Albuquerque Public Schools System.
I have no doubt that she is a distinguished woman in technology, her determination and hard work make me so proud to call her sister."
What was your first job and what did you learn from it?
The summer after my senior year in high school I served in the Youth
Conservation Corps. We conducted a reptile census, which involved a lot of
running around the deserts of southern New Mexico chasing rattlesnakes! I
gained leadership skills and learned a lot about personal responsibility
and accountability. Enduring extreme work conditions and bizarre
assignments for $2.50/hr made me even more committed to obtaining a college
degree.
Who is your hero, mentor or person you most admire? Why?
My mother has always been my hero and mentor. Throughout my life, I
have known that I have her unconditional love. This basis has made it
possible for her to be brutally honest with me, push me when I've needed
it, and accept the wisdom that her life experiences have given her.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
What is the single most interesting element of your work?
I like the fact that my work is constantly changing and I'm challenged
by coming up with new ideas and solutions.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
I've obtained my degree, created a fantastic career, developed a
strong professional reputation, designed and developed technical products
and 6 years ago became a parent. My greatest accomplishment is a work in
progress, and that is raising my daughter.
What was your greatest challenge and what did you learn from it?
My greatest challenge has been working in a predominately male field
and gaining the respect of my peers. I learned that I have more inner
strength than I thought, and became more self-confident.
