Sandra Burke is being honored for her research into drug-coated intravascular stents for the treatment of restenosis (the re-narrowing of arteries). A cardiovascular device that promises a significant improvement for surgical procedures to heart patients.

The underlying force behind this breakthrough is that cardiovascular disease is a prime cause of death for women that claims 500,000 lives yearly. Sandra has made it her lifelong work to decrease these statistics.

Her research promises a significant decrease in the requirement for secondary surgical procedures associated with restenosis and more effective solutions for heart patients. Her contributions to science in restenosis and drug-coated stents are a cornerstone of Abbot’s cardiovascular device research and have provided key support for Abbott’s entry into this competitive market.

With over 20 years of cardiovascular research, she has contributed to advancing science and technology as a prolific author of over 65 abstracts, book chapters, and publications in scientific journals. Sandra is also a highly sought-after lecturer for the scientific community.

Sandra encourages women to follow their dreams and passions. She has facilitated and created programs that motivate young women to choose careers in science and technology.

At Abbott, she was a founding member of the Black Business Network and serves on its executive council. She also serves as a member of Abbott Women Leaders in Action. In both roles, she serves as a mentor to a number of Abbott employees who are interested in fostering their scientific careers. Named a champion for Abbott’s diversity, Sandra serves as a role model to students in the community by speaking at area high schools and student forums on career opportunities.

Sandra says she followed in the footsteps of her mother who had the determination to achieve her goals and has motivated her to do the same. She embodies the passion, perseverance, and vision that she echoes to those she mentors. Through challenge and diversity in her career and personal achievements, Sandra’s excitement and passion have made all the difference.
