Agilent Technologies appoints Darlene Solomon as vice president and director of Agilent Laboratories
PALO ALTO, CA -- Darlene Solomon, WITI Hall of Fame inductee and member of WITI's advisory board, has been named vice president and director of Agilent Laboratories, the central research facility for Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A). She replaces Tom Saponas, who is retiring.

Solomon most recently held a dual role as director of the Life Science Technologies Laboratory within Agilent Labs and as senior director of research and development/technology for Agilent's Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis (LSCA) business. At Agilent Labs, she has been responsible for addressing the long-range technology strategy in support of Agilent's growing life sciences business, which is aimed at the drug discovery, genomics, proteomics and molecular diagnostics markets. At LSCA, Solomon has managed near-term global, group-level R&D strategy, R&D investments and product development processes.

"Darlene has made extraordinary strategic and scientific contributions to the growth and development of Agilent's life sciences business," said Ned Barnholt, Agilent chairman, president and CEO. "She brings a strong technical background, solid business management experience and an enthusiasm for technology that make her an exceptional candidate for this important technology leadership role at Agilent."

Solomon joined Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in 1984 as a member of its technical staff, and held increasingly responsible research and management positions there prior to the formation of Agilent Technologies in 1999. From 1978 to 1984, she conducted extensive academic research at Stanford University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Solomon earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Stanford and a doctorate in inorganic chemistry from MIT.

With numerous patents and publications to her name, Solomon was inducted into the Women in Technology International's Hall of Fame in 2001, and she now serves on WITI's advisory board. She serves on the External Advisory Board for NSF's (National Science Foundation) Nanobiotechnology Center and the Policy Board for DARPA's (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Center for Biochemical Optoelectronic Microsystems, and she is affiliated with numerous other influential professional associations.

Eating from the Inside Out
By Ed Bloch, co-founder, Life Enrichment Center

There are many explanations for why nearly 70% of Americans are overweight (NHANES 1999-2000). When we add in the number of Americans battling anorexia or bulimia, we begin to see a bitter truth: our unhealthy relationships with food are not individual problems of "self-control" but an insidious problem within our culture that burdens us all. And the solutions that have been offered so far simply have not worked; in fact, they may be making things worse.

Let's briefly look at the facts. In the U.S., between 1960 and 2000:

  • The dollars spent on weight loss related materials increased 1000%, from 5 billion dollars to 50 billion dollars (M.Maine, 2000)
  • The incidence of obesity rose 50%, from 65 million to 97 million people (NHANES 1999-2000)
  • The rate of increase in bulimia (in women 18 - 28) rose from 1% to 20% (ANAD)

Chapter News

Meet Jenny Laden, WITI Boston

Hello there. My name is Jenny Laden, and I am the new Chapter Director of WITI Boston. As those of you who are familiar with the city know, Boston is a vibrant technology hub with a high concentration of high-tech companies, so we're thrilled to have WITI back in Beantown!

In my "other" life I am President of my own public relations firm, called Duende Communications. As we focus on small to medium-sized technology companies, I have been able to build a significant network of marketing contacts, technology specialists and technology executives that can all serve as resources or potential speakers for WITI. I'm hoping that these connections will help me to bring a fresh perspective and interesting, relevant and timely programs to the new chapter - and to the Boston community.

We already have more than 150 members and are committed to doubling that number within the next six months through a diverse offering of events and programs. Our theme for this year is "Women Leading Reinvention and Innovation," so we thought what better way to start the year off than with a panel of three women who have made a name for themselves in their industries through perseverance, tenacity and, of course, innovation. If you're in the area, please visit www.witi.com/boston for more event details. And don't forget to keep checking back for information on other upcoming events!

Looking forward to meeting many of you... Here's to a great year for WITI!
