Leadership Council
Carey Harrington has been with WITI since its inception in San Diego and has served as Director and member of the Leadership Council. She co-founded Defense Technology Analysts in 2004 in order to continue her work in advancing technologies for Homeland Security, the fastest growing industry of the decade. Carey initially began in Homeland Security sector as the first Program Administrator for the Center for the Commercialization of Advanced Technology (CCAT) in San Diego and San Bernardino, Carey was responsible for the coordination of the congressionally funded program, among other duties. CCAT founded in 2001, is an $18 million dollar program tasked with the identification, selection and funding of technology for Homeland Security. The program is managed by the Office of Naval Research and San Diego State University Foundation. Prior to coming on board at CCAT, Carey was President of Harrington International. Carey acquired SBA - SDB certification and was listed in the Navy Potential Contractor Program. Harrington International provided technical translations, English/Spanish, international technology transfer, technology commercialization, technology assessments, and market intelligence. Her clients included Eli Lily/Galbreath Kite, GTE, Orincon International, numerous Small Business Development Centers, and California Community Colleges. Providing award winning community service throughout her career, Carey has served on numerous non-profit advisory boards. She founded the East Kern County Hispanic Advisory Council, which provides scholarships for Hispanic students, she presently works with the San Diego Science Alliance, and the BeWise program that provides educational workshops for girls in science and engineering, and is part of the NanoBioNexus Executive Team. Carey graduated from the University of Redlands with a BS in Business Administration. Carey attended school in Guadalajara, Mexico (School of Psychology) and Rambouillet, France, (French Studies) and graduated from the Global BioExecutive Program at the Haas School of Management at UC Berkeley. She enjoys deep- sea fishing; her biggest catch to date is a 520 lb blue marlin off the coast of Kona, HI in 2003. Carey is the mother of two very wonderful adults - Charles and Dominique, ages 26 and 24.
Molly is an IT industry veteran with a background in Business Analysis, Software Development, Quality Assurance and Project Management. She spent her early career working at EDS for a dozen years which included 8 years in San Diego supporting financial institutions. She is currently working at Fish & Richardson supporting the in-house Document Management System for the Patent and Trademark practices. Molly is a long time member of the local WITI Network and one of our best long term volunteers. She has worked tirelessly to attend and support each of the local meetings and encourages membership. Molly served in the U.S. Air Force. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Central Florida with a BS in Management and Computer Science. She is a member of PMI San Diego (Project Management Institute) where she has worked on the yearly conference planning committee for the past few years. She enjoys connecting with people and travelling to Hawaii several times a year to keep in touch with family.
Monica Berlanga received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 2006 from the University of Texas at Austin. She is now working as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research characterizing an animal model of hyperdopaminergia, the dopamine transporter knockout (DATKO) mouse. This mouse model is currently used to study a variety of neurological disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Parkinson’s disease, Schizophrenia, and drug addiction. She specializes in electron microscopy and advanced imaging techniques to help disseminate her scientific findings to the public. As a postdoctoral scholar, she manages a small research team of undergraduates studying at UCSD, providing them with valuable research experience that will help them in their future professional endeavors. She is committed to her research and her students. Monica is an active member of several other organizations including, Society for Neuroscience, National Hispanic Science Network, Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, and Hispanics Organized for Public Education. In her spare time, Monica manages and plays violin for a UCSD mariachi band. Some of her favorite sports include basketball, football and softball. She currently plays on an intramural softball team at UCSD. Monica received her B.S. in Biochemistry and M.A. in Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Austin.
Katherine Kline has been working in the Human Resource industry since 1990. She started out as a sales representative and worked with employees of non-profit organizations. Over the years she advanced her career by becoming a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and started helping her clients as a Financial Planner. Later as an RIA representative she worked as a fee-based planner. After 17 years as a financial planner with three staff members, she decided that she wanted to do something new. In 2006 she sold the majority of her practice and started working in the PEO (Professional Employer Organization) industry. As a consultant to small business owners, she helps save them time and aggravation by helping them outsource much of the back-office duties that come with having employees. Active in Soroptimist International, a non-profit charitable group, she helped increase the club's membership by over 10% in 2006. In 2007 she is co-chairing the membership committee and also sits on the Board as a Director. She is also active on the 'Road to Rilla' committee, which was formed to build a home for girls who are aging out of the foster care system. She is also interested in the YMCA and has worked on the East County YMCA's major fundraiser, 'The Branding' for two years in a row. She became a member of Tech Coast Angels in January of 2007 and is very active in the group. She has participated in screening and due diligence committees and is on the 'Power of Angel Investing' committee for 2008. She is interested in working with High Tech and Bio Tech companies.
Jennifer Beckey is an entrepreneurially-minded executive with a passion for building companies. Her past business experience includes 20 years of management and business development in the high technology and professional services sectors. She is currently the Director of Administration for the law firm of Kirby Noonan Lance & Hoge, LLP, and also serves as Regional Vice President for WITI Southern California. In January 2001, Jennifer founded the San Diego chapter of FWE, which became the WITI San Diego regional network in January 2005. She built the original chapter from its inception to a membership base of over 200 members, and remains active in its leadership to the present date. Jennifer is an active member of several foundations and organizations. She serves on the board of the WITI San Diego Leadership Council (2001-present), and chaired the Sharp Hospice 2006 and 2007 Annual Regatta organizing committee. She is a member of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum board and Executive Committee. She is a member of ALA (Association of Legal Administrators). Jennifer has a Bachelor of Arts from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. She studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris in 2001, and received her certificate, Chef du Patisserie du Bas, in August 2001. Her passion is sailing, and she and her husband competed in the 2005 Transpacific Yacht Race (sailing from Long Beach, CA to Honolulu, HI).
Professional experience: Jennifer Kinsbruner Bush is an Associate in the San Diego office of Fish & Richardson P.C. Her practice emphasizes litigation in all areas of intellectual property. Ms. Bush was previously an Associate with Irell & Manella (2001-2002), and a Research Assistant/Summer Associate with Wiggin & Dana. She has other Summer Associate experience with Cleary Gottlieb (1999) and Kirkland & Ellis (1998). Ms. Bush served as a Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Stanley Marcus, United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit (2000-2001). One of her recent cases was recognized by the National Law Journal as one of the "Top Defense Wins for 2004" (Arendi v. Microsoft). After many years of tracking leading-edge technologies in the high-tech industry, Adriana entered the Life Sciences arena embarking in projects such as BioAgenda Programs, an independent think-tank focused on addressing the defining issues of the biotech industry through a series of issues and policy forums where she was Development Director. Prior to founding NanoBioNexus, Adriana was at the forefront of the nanobiotechnology sector and was instrumental in building and shaping similar organizations in Silicon Valley from the ground up. As a professional marketing consultant with Adjunct, LLC, Ms. Vela has assisted start-up companies in securing funding, doing market validation, customer acquisition and go-to-market strategies. She has held various marketing and business development management positions at Fortune 100 companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Compaq Computers, Tandem Computer, as well as early-stage start-ups in the software and biotech industries. Adriana has been the executive sponsor for over 15 international road shows designed and tailored for various audiences as part of her sales turnaround strategy or market development strategy with specialization in Latin America. Adriana has also brought dozens of technology products to market, has managed multi-million dollar corporate initiatives, and has been a dynamic public speaker with engagements worldwide. Adriana created the strategy and was the driving force behind a multi-company standards initiative leading to the creation of a new PCI SIG-sanctioned industry standard called Hot-Plug PCI, forever changing the architectural requirements of computers. She holds a Bachelors of Business Administration/Information Technology from the University of Texas in Austin and has served on other decision-making boards.
