About Our Speaker(s)

Bio of Hui Cai, Johnson & Johnson:

Dr. Hui Cai received her B.S. and M.S. from Peking University, and Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1999 from The Scripps Research Institute, where she worked under the guidance of Professor Dale Boger. She then joined Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, L.L.C. in San Diego, working on small molecule drug discovery programs targeting immune mediated inflammatory diseases. She is a co-author and co-inventor to over thirty scientific publications and issued or pending patents.

Dr. Cai is a commissioner at City of San Diego Science and Technology Commission.
She also serves as a board member of Sino-American Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SABPA), the American Chemical Society San Diego Section (ACS San Diego), and was former President of San Diego Chinese Association (SDCA).

Dr. Cai is attending the Rady School of Management of UC San Diego as a DLA Piper - Athena FlexMBA Scholar, and expects to receive her MBA in summer 2007.

Bio of Kari Dickinson, Ph.D., Fish & Richardson, P.C.:

Dr. Kari Dickinson is a Scientific Advisor in the San Diego office of Fish & Richardson P.C. Her practice supports patent prosecution in the area of biology. Prior to joining Fish & Richardson, Dr. Dickinson was doing postdoctoral work at the Salk Institute in the laboratory of Joanne Chory investigating molecular mechanisms of shade avoidance in Arabidopsis. She performed her doctoral training at the Stanford University School of Medicine characterizing mammalian and amphibian early endoderm development. She was previously a Research Assistant at the University of California San Diego (1998-1999) and a Research Assistant at The Scripps Research Institute (1997-1998).

Education: University of California San Diego B.S. Biology 1998 summa cum laude; Stanford University School of Medicine Ph.D. Developmental Biology 2005.

Practice areas: Patents. Technology areas: Biology.

Bio of Jayshree Gerken, Ph.D., Esq., Fish & Richardson, P.C.:

Jayshree A. Gerken is an Associate in the San Diego office of Fish & Richardson P.C. Her practice emphasizes patent prosecution in the area of biochemistry. Ms. Gerken has significant technical experience as a research scientist in genomics with Chugai Biopharmaceuticals (1995-1998) and a research scientist in nucleic acid chemistry with Gen-Probe (1993-1995). She also worked as a postdoctoral associate in chemistry at Yale University (1990-1993), research assistant, Ph.D. program in biochemistry, Dartmouth College (1984-1990), and research assistant, Master's program in organic chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology (1982-1984).

Education: St. Xavier's College B.Sc. Chemistry 1982; Indian Institute of Technology M.Sc. Chemistry 1984; Dartmouth College Ph.D. Biochemistry 1990; California Western School of Law J.D. 2002 magna cum laude; Associate Editor, California Western Law Review.

Bio of Grace Nakayama, Ph.D., Biogen Idec:

Grace recently joined Biogen Idec as a Program Manager, where she is managing two oncology drug programs from preclinical through Phase 2 clinical studies. Previously, she worked on early stage drug discovery project teams as a Senior Principal Scientist at Pfizer. Her professional experience also includes Research Scientist positions at Biofocus DPI (formerly IRORI) and Applied Molecular Evolution (formerly Ixsys), as well as postdoctoral work at SRI International.

She received her B.S. in Applied Chemistry from Harvey Mudd College and Ph.D. in Bio-organic Chemistry from UC Berkeley. She is currently enrolled in a Biotech Project Management Certificate program at UCSD Extension.

Grace’s professional activities include serving on the Strategy Sessions Committee of AWIS San Diego. In addition, she is active with BIOCOM as a member of the education subcommittee and she helped create the BIOCOM Workforce Development Center (www.biocomworkforce.org).
