In fact, only 11 percent of Fortune 500 technology company executives are females. And even more astonishing, 56 percent of women in the tech industry usually leave to pursue other careers. The news isn't all bad: There are programs encouraging girls to enter the technology sector, and some universities have noted a larger number of females declaring computer science as their major.

Data from various sources compiled by IT Manager Daily gives a glimpse of the educational, salary and disparities between the genders in the technology sector. Although Mayer joins tech magnates like Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, women still remain under-represented in technology field.
