A Senior Perspective
by Carolyn Leighton-Tal (carolyn@witi.com)

Whenever I start to mentally prepare for this column, the central question inevitably becomes, "What can I write about that will provide readers with the kind of information, perspective and thinking that will add positive value to their life?"

Feeling particularly sentimental with thoughts of turning 60 next March, I suddenly felt a strong urge to write about a series of issues related to people over 50 who work in the youth-dominated technology industry.

Additionally, I reasoned, everyone is affected by the population growing older, so why not get these issues out into the open and find better ways to incorporate this growing generation more effectively into our lives?.

Therefore, I would like to create a space in this column for open, healthy dialogue about age issue and create a fresh perspective. This topic is particularly timely as the population, in general, is growing older, and the shortage of workers in technology forces all of us to consider creative alternatives for finding good people.

To start the discussion: On the positive side, I would like to offer the fact that, at 59, I believe that my job performance as an executive was the best this past year it has ever been. It was as if my 20 years of experience all came together in a way that allowed me to perform at a higher level. I expect next year to actually be better, since my new performance also helped me gain insights into areas I need to improve.

What are your experiences as a woman over 50 working in technology? What are your experiences managing people over 50? What are your experiences when you consider hiring over 50? Please share your experiences and perspectives - anonymously or otherwise - to create healthier exchanges with each other!
