Clearly I don't get to New York often enough, by now I would have met writer and products guru Maya Baratz, who is currently working on new products at The Wall Street Journal.

She started out by asking the nearly all women audience at WITI (Women in Technology International): How many of you are still waiting for your mentor? How many of you spend your time trying to prove someone wrong?

The last 2 days have been an amazing, positive, supportive conference with women from everywhere with all kinds of insight, suggestions and help to each of us. Yesterday was my first time participating in NextGen, a program for young girls interested in science, technology, math as a career. The girls I took already told me that they all want to go next year! It was neat to hear Facebook Director of Engineering, Jocelyn Goldfein speak with the high school students.

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) turns five years old this month. As companies rush to shore up pension or cancel underfunded plans you need to protect yourself from common pension mistakes. PPA was designed to close loopholes in the pension system and addresses problems for the roughly 34 million Americans covered by traditional pensions known as defined-benefit plans.

Here I am referring to how you can use sound and music to achieve success with less effort and more fun. I am talking about the new interdisciplinary study of how music/sound impacts a person's brain, body and mind.

Your Unique Energy Patterns and Your Career Success

In most modern personality typologies, such as Myers-Briggs' or David Keirsey's system, or Enneagram, mental emotional patterns of a person are presented without any reference to the temporal aspect, the way her/his energy changes through weeks, months, and years. This is why I particular like the typology introduced by Dr. Joseph Michael Levry. It has been used by thousands of his students throughout the world. The one thing I've noticed about his system is: unlike those who have done their Myers-Briggs assessment, people who use Dr. Levry's system are often found enthusiastically discussing their own or their friends' energy patterns. It is evident that they are actively using the system, not just get it done and put it in the drawer.

Don't Just Go Halfway in Your Career Reinvention

Many people come to a place of knowing it is time to reinvent their lives or careers when they hear themselves say these fateful words, "I just can't do this anymore." Regardless of how they arrive at this place (e.g., boredom that has built up over many years, a company merger or acquisition that shifts the management structure in undesirable ways, a new boss who is uninspiring or worse dispiriting) they are ready to walk away and "reinvent." And the greater the boredom or displeasure that precipitates the drive to break free, the stronger is the desire to "do something completely different" and to "be someone completely different." Yet no matter how strong the motivation to initiate change, unless you are skilled and experienced in the process of reinvention, there is a good chance that you will only see and address half of the available opportunity before you - and miss your chance to create the career path or job of your dreams. Here's why.

Nine Levels of Health For Women Professionals and Executives

As another new year is approaching, it is a perfect time to do an overall health & success checkup on yourself. The Nine Levels of Health is a simple system that can help you to keep track of all the significant aspects of life. Because of the busy lifestyle of most women professionals and leaders, we seldom get a chance to sit down and reflect on our life as a whole. And yet the whole is what truly matters, because that's the bottom line, the sum total. In these fast changing times, it is easy to forget that life (and work) is like a big garden with many plants and flowers, which, if neglected, will perish. Once the damage has occurred, the repairing process is going to be much more costly than preventive measures.

February 4th was Go Red Day again. Even with all the campaigns and publicity in the media, many of us are just too busy multitasking to pay attention to our heart. According to statistics, about half of the female population in this country is still unaware that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Many women who experience their first heart attack also die from it. In other words, this killer can creep up on you without a warning (or with a warning you don't normally recognize). It is likely you will be caught off guard.

Why Goal Setting Alone Won't Get You to Where You Want to Be

No doubt you are intimately familiar with the concept of goal setting - it's all about defining WHAT you want to accomplish and "get done." While it's true that goals can keep you focused and on track there is also a little-discussed downside to goals. Because goals are by definition about the "what" they can seem a little impersonal and cold, and many times they are motivated by externals - what you think you "should" be going after. And as you focus on "what" it is you need to do, and all the steps it will take to make it happen, it can feel overwhelming. The better you are at goal setting, the more diligent you are in breaking down goals into the Action Steps necessary to achieve them, the larger your "To Do" list grows. Executing the Action Steps can feel like a "forced march" from one step to the next. You may take some small pleasure in checking items off your "To Do" list, but the pleasure is often minimal and fleeting as there is always the next step in front of you. So what's wrong with this picture? What's missing? Where did goal setting go wrong?

Why Some Affirmations Work, While Others Don't

Your New Year Resolution can benefit from an affirmation. The right word flashing in your mind at the right time can send a signal to your entire body-mind and create the shift you desire. Affirmation can be very effective any time of year, whenever you have made a key decision in your life. However, if you don't know how to use it, affirmation is just like most New Year resolutions, done and forgotten within two weeks. When that happens, it is more than a waste of time: it saps your confidence in your own mental power.

The Journey from Control to Resilience

Do you strive to control what happens in your life and relish the feeling of being "in control?" Are you, dare I say it, a control freak - one who feels more safe and secure when you can control both what gets done and how it gets done? Unfortunately, sooner or later most control freaks learn the same hard lesson - control of external events and people is an illusion. The shattering of the illusion of control may come slowly and subtly or with a calamitous bang. But when it comes, and the old sense of security disappears, it helps to know that there is something beyond "control" - something positive that you can move toward - a different "state of being" that can become the new core around which you can re-center - and that new state is "resilience."

In the October 13th edition of WITI's Strategist, I wrote an article titled "Exploring your Life Mission" I asked the question: "Do you know what your life purpose is?" A number of you emailed me that this question struck a chord with you. Many of you don't know what your life purpose is and some shared that you feel stuck in a life and/or a career that doesn't have a lot of meaning and is draining you. This article is designed to address what to do when you feel "stuck."

Do you want cereal or eggs for breakfast? Do you want to walk, or ride your bike, or take a bus, or drive your car to work? You make literally thousands of choices each day, many without much conscious thought. Clearly you have the ability to make choices - you know how to do it and you have experience doing it. But what happens when you face bigger choices with larger consequences - such as deciding to change your job or profession, or start a business, or deciding whether or not to submit your resume to a job opening? Do you find yourself stuck or vacillating? And when you remain undecided do you notice how the options and opportunities you could have chosen disappear or pass you by? Would you like to be able to make decisions more easily and make better choices? Here are three things you can do.

Any time you know what you want to accomplish, and even know the steps you want to take to reach your goal(s), but just can't seem to make any progress it is highly likely that FEAR is a major factor keeping you stuck. And as counter-intuitive as it may seem one of the best ways to abolish your fear in any situation is not to ignore it, or deny it, or to try to "push on through it," but rather to examine it more closely.

A friend sent me a very important email recently - a reminder to all of us how much we take for granted, particularly with regard to our right to vote. Don't you agree that every election provides each of us an opportunity to participate in the future of our government and our society while also paying homage to the women - some of whom died in prison - who fought so hard to earn the right to give each woman the right to vote? Please share this with every woman you know and please exercise your right to vote on November 2!

Have you ever wondered if you are living a life that honors your life purpose? Do you know what your life purpose is? Most of us don't grow up "knowing" what we are here to do in this lifetime, or if we did know, we many times forget or get sidetracked as we get older and take on the responsibilities of adult life. Think about it - when was the last time you knew that you were honoring your life's purpose? If you are having trouble answering this question, you are not alone. The majority of my coaching clients come to me feeling a lack of energy and purpose in their lives. My goal is to help them to connect with their life's purpose and to then live a life that honors it. In this article, I want to give you the first steps to begin to explore your life purpose so that you can ultimately create a mission statement for your life and your career.

Even in the toughest of job markets, it's important to keep your values in sight. Certainly money matters but we all want to work for more than just a paycheck. We need to be able to articulate what matters to us and what gives us satisfaction, whether it's in solving complex problems, providing excellent customer service, being part of a team that does great things, or anything else that motivates you to excel in your profession. Whether you are unemployed and seeking a job or feeling trapped in an unrewarding job, some introspection will help guide your career in the right direction.

Everything you do or say or strive for is done in an attempt to create a feeling. Read that first sentence again - it is an important one. Your core drive is an emotional not a logical one and it influences how you communicate, what you strive for, and the nature of your relationships. Once you become aware of this fact it can become a life changer - if you remain unaware or only vaguely aware of it you are in for a rough ride. Here's why.

Are you currently in a state of transition? Are you in the process of starting, or in the middle of navigating, a major change in your life (e.g., job change, career change, relationship change)? If so it is likely that you find yourself asking the following questions over and over as you move through the stages of the change process: "Is what I am thinking, feeling, and doing 'NORMAL' under these circumstances? Or am I making stupid mistakes and going in the wrong direction - is there something wrong with me?" These questions are especially meaningful when the transition is one that you are planning or initiating yourself (as opposed to one that is thrust upon you), because no matter how smart or skilled you are in your current life situation when you step into uncharted territory the sign posts disappear and you lose calibration.

Our purpose is our reason for being - it's why we're here on this earth. Each of us has a unique purpose in life. It's up to us to uncover our purpose and fulfill it. By doing so, we will be a blessing to others, and be blessed as well.

Procrastination Meets Perfectionism - The Problem with "Starting Fresh"

For many people it is easier to make a new plan than to put it into action. Are you one of these people? You may be motivated to make a change, know what you want to do, and may even have a strategy mapped out. But there you sit - consumed by inaction - needlessly delaying tasks you know you need to do in a way that is counterproductive. A common term for this state of affairs is procrastination - and textbooks are full of explanations for what causes procrastination, to include the following: being unrealistic about time, fear of change, fear of failure, or disorganization. But one of the most interesting "causes" is perfectionism - because when perfectionism mixes with procrastination it can spawn the perfect storm I call "the Problem with Starting Fresh."

A resume simply isn't enough in a competitive job market. Getting your resume noticed is tough enough. Getting an interview is even harder. The internet offers networking opportunities - LinkedIn, Plaxo, etc. - but even they don't seem to capture the attention that you need to get a foot in the door. So what does it take to get attention? In a highly visual, multi-media world, it makes sense that a visual portfolio of your abilities and accomplishments is at least part of the answer.

Have you ever known anyone who seems to sail through rough times? Whether they experience job loss, financial set-backs, or health issues, they seem to bounce back easily. What is it that sets these people apart? Resilience is the ability of people to cope with stress and crisis, and then rebound quickly. Highly resilient people have stress-resistant personalities. They don't fall apart during crisis; they're able to cope well with adversity, and learn valuable lessons from their tough experience.

What is your secret underlying need - the one that flows like an underground river beneath your thoughts and actions, that influences how you feel about things, situations, and people and drives your actions? I know that you have one because we all do - that core need that morphs into a core belief about yourself that is so powerful it reverberates through everything you do and say, and affects your actions and your relationships often without your conscious awareness. Chances are those who know you well can see it or at least sense it unconsciously, and it's a good bet that even you are aware of it at some superficial and intellectual level. But it is also highly likely that you are unaware of its great power over you and the unintended consequences it creates in your life.

If one of the panelists or speakers is a woman, inevitably someone asks the question why there aren't more women founders or more start-up women in technology and science. While the number of women small business owners hovers around 50 percent, the number of women founders of hi-tech start-ups is in the low single digits. What makes the technology industry different?
