Lunch and Learn: Going Scriptless with Nationwide Insurance



Over the past year Nationwide Insurance has moved in the direction of using a scriptless model for automating their software testing with a tool called Tosca. Join us for a discussion of this topic with the following highlights:

Billy Flannery and Anita Uppalapati of Nationwide will describe the journey, why they made this decision, and how it is being rolled out in waves.

Joseph Beale of COSQAM will talk about the benefits of scriptless automation versus other methods and go deep into model-based automation using the Tosca tool.

There will also be a general discussion around how this type of test automation changes the nature of testing teams and contributes to the overall digital transformation process.

Billy Flannery is a Director of IT Analysis for a Fortune 100 Company. Billy has 16+ years of experience leading software development initiatives, high-profile enterprise-wide projects, and the delivery of world-class solutions-leveraging Agile, Iterative, and Waterfall-in a Fortune 100 environment. In addition, he has built, trained, and lead high-impact teams, thriving in settings allowing for significant coaching, mentorship, and development of associates and managers. Currently he leads 350+ IT professionals-including up to 9 IT managers-located in multiple sites that oversee software quality assurance, requirements, and testing to ensure product and process quality.


Anita Uppalapati is the NF Quality Engineering Coach at Nationwide. She has lead testing efforts on a range of program and projects that are Tier 1 and Tier 2 like Personal Lines Transformation Release 2.0 ,New Company ,Goal State Underwriting ,SmartRide etc. She enjoys working with Application teams ,listening and understanding their current testing challenges, identifying complex workflows that are manual intense by experimenting , designing and building innovate automation solutions that include risk-based testing and reusability that enable application teams efficiently test E2E to help save time ,money and deliver faster software releases . What she find most rewarding is the opportunity to help coach, mentor, and partner with fellow associates and stakeholders to achieve common goals. Beyond work, She likes to spend time with her husband (Praveen) daughters(Varsha, and Esha) and her Siberian Husky (Blue). She enjoys her family walks on the trail and having deep conversations with hers kids on being strong independent girls and supporting other girls (Power of the Pack).

Joseph Beale serves as Vice President of COSQAM and is the Site Coordinator and Sponsor Liason for the QA or the Highway conference. A former developer, Joe got into Software Testing and Quality Assurance back in 2002 and has been working in that area ever since, with a focus on Test Automation since 2012. Overall he has more than 21 years in Systems with experience in almost every area of the application life cycle. A graduate of Ohio State University, Joe currently works as a Solutions Architect for Tricentis and when not working on automated test cases or cheering on his beloved Buckeyes he enjoys basketball, golf, grilling, and spending time with his wife and seven children.
