In Memoriam - Anita Borg In Memoriam - Anita Borg, WITI Hall of Fame Awardee

Please join us in remembering Anita Borg who passed away at her mother's home in Sonoma at the age of 54.

Anita was a highly respected leader who served on the Presidential Commission for the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering and Technology. "I had great admiration for her vision, her stellar accomplishments and her dedication to making a positive difference" said Carolyn Leighton, Founder/Chairwoman of WITI. "This is a huge loss for all of us".

A visionary, who started the first e-mail networks for women in technology - Systers - in 1987, Ms. Borg also co-founded the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing inspired by the legacy of Navy Admiral Grace Murray Hopper. She also founded the Institute for Women and Technology in 1987.

WITI Attends Office of Technology Policy
In response to state and regional requests for assistance in identifying factors that influence regional innovation and competitiveness, the U.S. Department of Commerce today released an annual report that measures the science and technology indicators in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The third annual edition of The Dynamics of Technology-Based Economic Development, released by the Commerce Department's Office of Technology Policy, contains data to help policy-makers and regional leaders better understand the factors that influence economic outcomes at the state and local level. Areas such as education levels, R&D investment and the numbers of patents issued are among the categories measured.

"Technological innovation and commercialization are the new drivers of economic growth, both in the U.S. and around the world," said Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy Bruce Mehlman. "As state business and government leaders attempt to fashion appropriate economic development strategies, many first try to measure and understand their existing science and technology assets and strengths. This report goes a long way in helping localities obtain the information they need."

An Example of Networking at its Best!
By Carolyn Leighton, Founder/Chairwoman, WITI

I love storytelling. Stories that teach lessons empower me to think differently, inspire me to create something great. I guess that is why I find WITI meetings so inspiring. Networking the joy I experience from being in a room filled with smart women who genuinely want to help each other. The energy is literally transforming.

WITI's First College Chapter - WITI Cal Poly
The first college chapter of WITI has just been created at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo! Lauren Wood, a Cal Poly student, attended the WITI 2002 Silicon Valley Conference, and as a result of this great experience was inspired to bring WITI to the university level. She recruited me (Jennifer Roecks), as a fellow student, to help her accomplish this large task. Consequently, Lauren and I have been working diligently for the past few months to get the chapter up and running. We recently gained recognition as an official club by the University, and our first meeting is scheduled for April 24th. Carolyn Leighton, the founder of WITI, will be speaking at our first meeting, so we are off to a terrific start. The possibilities presented by integrating college students into the vision that is WITI seem endless, and Lauren and I are thrilled to be a part of it. We are aiming to have our chapter attend the WITI 2003 Silicon Valley Conference and look forward to meeting many of you there!

WITI Chapter Spotlight - Meet Kate Dearaujo, WITI, New York
Kate Dearaujo, a Wall Street veteran, began her career at Smith Barney and Bear Stearns managing institutional and high net-worth individual portfolios. She is currently a financial services representative at MetLife's Strategic Planning Group. Prior to joining MetLife, she spent a decade in industry, most recently as a Managing Director of Business Development at Snickelways Interactive, which was named by Deloitte and Touche during her tenure as one of the fastest growing technology companies in the U.S.

She helped develop and market her first women-in-business program in her previous position at Avon Products, where she lead the sales division of Avon Lifedesigns - one of the first industry curricula providing leadership and work/life seminars for female executives. WITI New York's first mission is to reinforce the organization's founding principles. Through monthly seminars and less-structured meetings, they will offer education, leadership, mentoring, networking and the exchange of ideas essential to the advancement of the members both professionally and personally. New York is a fertile community where industry leaders and industry newcomers can forge relationships through new and old media channels, including work/life seminars, health and human resources, financial planning assistance, legal resources, newsletters, book clubs, bulletin board, "where to find" resources, social events and image workshops.

On the chapter level, they aim to strengthen and develop strategic partnerships and marketing initiatives. You may reach Kate directly by e-mail: [email protected]
