"The Art of Angel Investing": A Joint Presentation of WITI San Diego and San Diego Tech Coast Angels

This is a joint program presented by the San Diego Tech Coast Angels (www.techcoastangels.com) and WITI San Diego.

Listen to a several members of the local angel investing group, San Diego Tech Coast Angels (TCA), describe their investment philosophy, what they look for in portfolio companies, the state of the market today, etc. We will also present a case study of a company that received an investment from TCA, with an analysis from both a company executive as well as an investor in the company.

Following an interactive program, there will be an additional 45 minute session devoted strictly for networking with the Angels. Come and meet them!

Bio of Ralph Mayer, Board Member, San Diego Tech Coast Angels:

Ralph Mayer is on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Tech Coast Angels. The Tech Coast Angels is a network of 250 private investors who invest in and assist early-stage, Southern California companies. He has been involved with angel investing since 2000, and has served on both the Board of Directors of the San Diego network of the Tech Coast Angels and on the Tech Coast Angel Board of Governors.

Mr. Mayer came to San Diego in 1999 to join Division Inc. - a San Diego and UK based software company developing visualization products to lead product marketing and software development. He initiated an OEM relationship with PTC a $1Billion enterprise software company, that concluded with the sale of Division to PTC in 2000.

Previously, Mr. Mayer was a founder of Adra Systems Inc a Boston based startup developing and marketing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.. He held various executive positions in product development and marketing at both Adra and its successor company MatrixOne. MatrixOne did a successful IPO and continues to a leader in the field of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) enterprise software.

Before Adra, he was held various management positions in product development at CAD pioneers Computervision Corp., and Applicon Inc, both based in Massachusetts.

He has a Masters of Science from M.I.T. and a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Architecture from McGill University in Montreal. He has written books on the Return on Investment of PLM Systems, and on CAD/CAM Database Translation. He was a leader in CAD standards development including the IGES and PDES data translation standards, and was Secretary of the IGES/PES Steering Committee.

Bio of Jack J. Florio:

Jack J. Florio
San Diego Tech Coast Angels
Vice President, Communications, Board Member and BioMedTrak Investor

Jack was one of the founding members of the BioMedTrak group of San Diego Tech Coast Angels and actively involved in the development and implementation of their Life Sciences strategy. In addition to deal analysis and due diligence team leadership, he is responsible for communications and public relations for the SDTCA.

Jack serves on the Board of Directors of ChemNavigtor, a privately held biotechnology company focused on drug discovery. Jack is also currently very active with a variety of organizations which promote the development of entrepreneurship and capital formation focused on emerging science and technology in the life sciences community in San Diego. These include the CONNECT Springboard and Mentoring Programs, and the Life Sciences Financial Forum. Jack is also a member of BIOCOM where he is active on the Financial Community Relations Committee, the Life Sciences Venture Network Subcommittee, and the Capital Formation Committee. Jack is on the Steering Committee for the San Diego Telecom Council (SDTC) Healthcare Communications Technology SIG. He also works with the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance (SDRTA) where he has serves on the review committee for Venture Roundtable and is actively involved in a number of programs with the Entrepreneurial Management Center at San Diego State University.

Additionally Jack is an active member of the San Diego Venture Group (SDVG), The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum (SDMIT) and other organizations which foster the evolution of science and technology from the lab, combining them with potential sources of funding and developing them into emerging companies.

Jack continues to assume senior management roles in emerging companies helping them develop strategies and implement those plans to get them to the next level of business, organizational, and corporate development. He has taken positions in six companies, assuming a variety of roles. Two of these are currently active, Vital Therapies, Inc and Aegis Therapeutics, LLC. Prior to this, Jack was in a variety of leadership positions (Business Development, Product Development, and CEO) with InJet Digital Aerosols here in San Diego.

Before coming to San Diego in 2001, Jack completed a successful 30 year career with Eli Lilly and Company where he was in senior leadership positions in Marketing, Market Research, Sales Management, Business Development, Worldwide Pricing Development, Business Unit Leadership, and other management roles both domestically and outside the US.

Jack has a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Columbia University and an MBA from New York University.

Bio of Geoffrey Boyes, Board Member, San Diego Tech Coast Angels:

As President and founder of Bilton International LLC, Geoffrey B. Boyes provides general, strategic and specific business advice and direction to private and closely held growth companies, with primary emphasis in the Life Sciences environment. Bilton International LLC also provides equity based funding or capital investments on a private basis to start-up or seed companies that demonstrate high growth potential. Real Estate is also included in the investment portfolio. Prior to starting his own company in October 1999, Geoff was General Manager, International, for LifeScan Inc., a Johnson & Johnson Company. Located on the edge of Silicon Valley, LifeScan is the world leader in Blood Glucose Self Monitoring Products, used daily by people with Diabetes.

Mr. Boyes retired from the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies after completing more than 30 years of service in an extensive number of diverse assignments, both domestic and international. He started his career in Sales and Sales Management with McNeil Pharmaceutical Company, now Ortho-McNeil. He subsequently moved into the Marketing arena where he was responsible for the promotion and marketing of Prescription Pharmaceutical Products in a number of different treatment areas. Transferring to the Medical and Diagnostic side of the business, Mr. Boyes held several positions in International General Management and New Business Development with a variety of Companies and Divisions. He set up businesses in Europe specializing in Hospital Medical Monitoring Equipment and Single Use Disposable Products. He continued this activity throughout Asia and the Pacific. Geoff served as the first General Manager for Johnson and Johnson Medical Taiwan, and operated from overseas bases in both Taiwan and Hong Kong. In his most recent assignment, Geoff established and managed successful LifeScan businesses in Japan, China, India, Russia, the Middle East, and most of the newly emerging countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

Born and educated in England, Geoff first came to the United States in the mid 1960’s. Essentially all his corporate business career was with Johnson and Johnson. He now operates as an independent business consultant, advisor, mentor and investor. He serves on the board of the San Diego Branch of the Tech Coast Angels Investment Group, and is a board member or advisor to a number of local companies. Geoff has always been involved in Community Affairs and local business, social, cultural, and sports organizations. He was active in the American Chamber of Commerce in all of his worldwide locations, and currently volunteers his time with a number of community organizations in the San Diego area.

Bio of Thomas Pichler, Chief Executive Officer, PedAlign:

Thomas Pichler is the Chief Executive Officer of Maxmed Technologies, Inc., a San Diego based company which develops and markets biomedical devices. As founder he has successfully raised capital from the TechCoastAngel network and other investors to finance the growth of his company.

Prior to starting Maxmed Technologies, Inc. in August 2001, he was the founder, VP Marketing & VP Business Development of Simplexis, Inc., the leader in enterprise software & training for the educational sector. Together with his co-founders he raised $35 million from investors GE Capital, ICG, Kaplan (Washington Post Group), CommerceOne and other leading investors, recruited outstanding board members including Lamar Alexander as Chairman (former US Secretary of Education and presidential candidate, currently Senator of TN) and Rick Smith (CEO of Newsweek), acquired two companies, grew revenues to $15MM with clear path to profitability, forged alliances with IBM and others, and built the leading brand in the sector. He left after the company had grown to 200 employees producing $15 million in revenues.

Before starting Simplexis, Thomas was the Senior Assistant to the CEO and a member of the Corporate Strategy and Development Team at “Dr. Ing. Porsche AG” (Porsche Automobiles) in Germany. Working directly for Dr. Wiedeking, Porsche’s highly respected President & CEO and one of Business Weeks Top 25 Managers of the World in ‘98, Prior to Porsche, Thomas was international business development manager with Austrian Energy & Environment where he led the environmental business unit’s efforts to enter new markets in Taiwan and South Korea. Before joining Austrian Energy, Thomas spent a year as Financial Analyst at Procter & Gamble.

Thomas completed his Master of Engineering at the University of Technology in Leoben (Austria) and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
