Beyond Technical Competence, Building Better IT Leadership

While technical knowledge is an important asset for an IT leader, it is no longer the most important asset. Beyond technical competence lies the sometimes murky areas of soft skills, project management, organizational change, and of course, the necessity of shaping your own role and carving your own path in the ever changing dynamics of today’s IT organizations.

From Sun-Tzu and The Art of War to Jim Collins of Good to Great, everyone has a theory about leadership, but leading in IT has unique challenges and requires specific traits and leadership competencies. This panel discuss will cover the importance of and expectations for change leadership, facilitation, emotional intelligence, teaming, and other soft skills in today’s IT environment, as well as the non-technical aspects of project/program management.

Typical paths through an IT career will be explored, with information shared about how to envision and shape a role once you receive it, the challenges at each transition, and the type of assignments that contribute most to your growth at each stage of your IT career.
